My Top 5 Online Pet Peeves

  1. An all-pink theme/layout. Pink is a nice color- girly, sweet and light. But some other web owners aren’t considering how their viewers might think of their sites. True that you are owner, you can do all you want to your website and you want a pink skin. But just imagine, if I have stumbled upon your site and see your oh-so-girly pink layout which hurts my eyes very much, I might just click the X button or just hit CTRL + F4. I won’t bother to read your blogs anymore because I can’t stand the color of your theme. So as a creative web owner, just play enough with the colors. Too much of everything might spoil the whole thing.
  2. Automatically playing background music. We all love music but putting it on your website and setting it to auto-play? A no-no. I’m telling you, it’s not a good idea. I remember when I visited this website and it has the auto-play sound, I almost cram to press Alt + F4! I was really shocked and went WTF!’ The music, mind you, was a hard core rock it almost broke my eardrum. So if I may suggest, don’t use auto-play sounds or if you really can’t get away with it, just please choose a soothing, soft music that won’t make your visitors go away.
  3. Line-height: 14px;. This is the space separating one line of the sentence to another. It’s a CSS code. I really find it ugly if I see a website not using the right line spacing. I also find hard time reading their entries because if you use the 14px line height, the lines of your paragraph are like pressed to one another; forced to fit. So I think for better reading and for your readers’ sake, adjust it to 18-21px. I think that would be already enough.
  4. Super long entries. Hello we’re already in 21st century and FYI, youth nowadays seem to find long blog posts boring. I personally think the same way, too. If you’re up for long, non-sense entries, better have it bullet-ed and precise. Think of minimizing the flowery words. And don’t talk too much about your life. Take note, too much, I didn’t say DO NOT talk about it. Two different things, right?
  5. XHTML and CSS valid… Not! I confess. I have this validation fetish over those two stuff in websites. I mean to say, if you put ‘Valid XHTML. Valid CSS’ on your footer or anywhere in your website, please, just please make sure it is. I never fail to click those links every time I see them. And if ever the results stated otherwise, I end up asking myself ‘Will he/she get mad if I say his/her coding is invalid but he/she stated otherwise?’ or ‘Your XHTML and CSS are valid? Really, you lie.’ Be a responsible webmaster, be sure all the things you put/write on your website are correct.
  1. Agree with number 1, too much of everything eek Lord! And also with number 2, with my first blog back in 2004, I had it automatically playing and even I grew tired of it so from that day on, no more music for me! hahaa

I think I’m guilty with 4. I really can’t help it. And i assure that my posts are not nonsensical, I mean I don’t just blab about my life. I just really write long for some reason. hehe :D

  2. LOL Ate Tiff! Yours are interesting naman. I don’t find it boring so free yourself from guilt. ;)

  3. lol. Definitely I agree with all these 5 pissed off way of blogging.. but considering a beginner trying to make her/his own CSS/XHTMl might find it hard to agree with number 5. Since they actually don’t know what their doing.. maybe you have to give sometimes for them to learned. With #2, I used to do that back when I was 1-3 years old in blogging. But now I’m 7 years, I’ve learned my lesson from the other bloggers. So I don’t put music on the background, but I find it sometimes cool.. especially if the background song is slow rock or such thing.. I talk so much now, this is maybe my long comment as of today. lol.. HAVE A NICE DAY! and HAPPY HALLOWEEN. Sorry for wrong spellings, I don’t look back. haha.. lazy me.

  4. Haha well it’s not really celebrated in Australia; I don’t take it seriously. :)

Oh well, some people just aren’t a fan of pets I guess? They’re probably just nice to look at for you, eh? ^^

I did take piano lessons. For about seven years. I didn’t finish the whole program. I got up to 6th grade (there are 8).

I totally agree with your pet peeves. I have leard of a lot of them but haven’t heard anyone mention the all-pink layouts. I do like pink and I know a lot of girls do, but TOO much pink – too much of anything – is terrible. It’s not always good on the eyes with that either.

I dislike text that is cramped together with tiny line height and especially when the text itself is small! Yuck. Hard to read. A real turn off.

Music annoys me a lot because I am often listening to my own music. I also open a lot of windows, so I struggle to find out where the hell the music is coming from. U_U

  5. no.2 is correct ate, haha cguro feeling nila e yung sound na nilagay nila sa blog/site nila is magugustuhan ng mga nakakarinig lol ^^ i love this post ^^

  6. The uber pink and auto play music, matagal na natin kaaway yun. lol! How many times ko na ba na-post yang ganyan sa mga entries ko but still people doesn’t listen. It’s their loss naman!
Hell yeah, every time na nakakakita ako ng long entries, automatic close the window. Alam ko kasi boring unless kilala ko talga yung blogger as a good writer. I have a friend blogger naman who writes long entries pero di ako na-bored kahit once.

  7. ahhaha.. got a pink a layout… i had thought about it after the layie was done.. but oh well.. its pink… lol

I agree with this!! Especially number 1. I mean, sure, pink is cute and really attractive, but can you add some color other than pink. Geez! I think 70% of the bloggers nowadays have super pink layouts. Tsk3!!
Automatic music? HATE THAT!! I really don’t like it since I’m already listening to a music or something, and ugh!! I just hate them!!
About the line-height, well, it really just depends upon the font size. :))
Super long entries? Uhmm.. I’m kind of guilty of that sometimes. Hehe :p
number 5? errr.. I don’t check mine. Hahhaa

  8. all i can say is one word: DITTO!

    wavelength.

oh can i include.. really really really bad english? i mean ok, i am not perfect and all and i’m saying im good at that language but dude, that’s like..

    REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD.

    Hahaha =))

    HIGH FIVE ATE APRIL!

wew! I agree.. sa # 1.. haha.. dte, super pink ang layout ko.. but i changed my mind co.. as you said, masakit sa mata… but there are cute pinks that don’t hurt my eyes too much.
automatic music? haha.. i’m guilty.. i had that kind of thing way back in my 2nd blog.. the song, uhmm.. “a thousand miles” hehe.. pero i deleted it kse may nagcomment dn.. haha..
Long entries? yah! katamad basahin.. kya feeling ko, ung ibang readers, nangongopya na lang ng comment! haha.. ndi na binabasa,,
to avoid long entries na rin.. d2 na ko titigil sa pagcocomment.. hehe! :P

  9. oooops see, i am not perfect.

..and i am NOT saying im good at that language

  10. Awh, thank you! I’ll get some screencaps up if I can. We lost everything on the computer, but I think my boyfriend is redoing it for me (:

#1. I agree with this one. Normally though, if blogs are all one color than fine. It’s when there are so many colors or a bad combination & it hurts my eyes. That’s the type of blog I leave.

#2. Background music, ugh. That’s so annoying. Especially when you’re blog hopping while listening to your own.

#3-#5. I agree with most of this as well, although I’m guilty of doing some of it sometimes (:

  11. i love pink so i dont really care about all pink layouts but its pretty much focusing on girly girls i guess :P i understand.
omg. i absolutely HATEEE auto play music. honestly. AHHHHHHHHHH
i can’t stand super long entries unless theyre REALLY interesting.
btw, i honestly love this layout (: its so simple and very nice !

  12. Yeah, I always close comments to return the comments I have, sorry. :P

Thank you, I’m glad the majority of my visitors like it. :) My old layouts aren’t THAT bad comparing with some people, but I guess I have improved.

I’ll try and make my last theme into a premade. :)

Hm, I tend not to use pink, well not just pink on it’s own because I hate it. But it doesn’t really bother me when I see other people using pink, if they contrast it nicely.

OMG, I hate going to a site and my Breaking Benjamin gets interrupting by Jonas Brothers Or Miley Cyrus, it’s so frustrating and annoying.

The line-height thing annoys me, if someone has literally no line-height I refuse to read their blog, simple as.

Super long entries are OK if they have something interesting to say, but otherwise I hate them too. Especially if someone doesn’t know how to use a paragraph. :@

Hm, the last one doesn’t really bother me too much except for when I’m reviewing. I took my XHTML and CSS links out of my current layout because my CSS isn’t valid haha.

  13. We almost have the same list ;)
I also hate auto-play music, insufficient line-height and super long entries.
I like One Time by Justin Bieber but i’m not really into that kind of music =)) .He’s cute though ;) XD

i miss you damn badly :(

  14. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pink. Personally I hate orange, brown, yellow and beige but I don’t leave a site just because it has that colour theme. However too bright colours are never nice. Be it pink or blue. Too bright hurts the eyes. Not the colour itself.

I’m guilty of not having valid CSS even though I state that I do on my site. That’s because all of my CSS is valid EXCEPT for a hack I use to make the layout work like I want it to in Opera.

  15. You’ve pointed out other pet peeves online that are quite unique compared to some articles/ blogs I’ve seen. :)

Pink isn’t my favourite colour but one-colour layouts can work pretty well if the colour is balanced out nicely. Just not too pink.

Music. Auto-starting music, arrrh. I hate loading a page happily listening to a song only to find Miley Cyrus singing horribly in my ears. D:

    Small line height sucks, period.
I try and keep my blogs pretty short; long blogs are just a pain in the butt to read. :(

And haha I see Valid links all over the place but I don’t check them because, well I just don’t? XD
    -

You’re right, she was stupid to judge me that way.
    And thanks. :)

  16. My XHTML isn’t .. :O
Well yes and no. Swine is like a flu, with flu symptoms but it can be deadly..
Actually some people are saying Vitamin D will help too. I’m not sure how.. but, I’m trying it :P

Yes, I agree absolutely with #1. It is very annoying to see that. It seems very childish, to have pink everywhere. Like, add some more colours..

I definitely agree with #2 and #3 – automatic background music is a pain in the neck for me because I’m always listening to my own music already (and usually don’t like what the website’s playing!), and I agree that #3 makes it really hard to read paragraphs, especially when it’s a long entry/page. I have to admit the others don’t bother me quite so much though…I don’t even think to check for validation codes or whatever. (I also don’t bother validating my site… *hides*).

Anyway, thanks for commenting on my site, always appreciated! Take care. :)

i so agree with you. :) lol

especially # 2 – the automatic music chenes. naiinis ako pag may ganong automatic na nagple-play. i mean i can’t concentrate on reading the entries pag ganun eh. hehe.

  17. I soo agree with this! As in lahat! Nakakainis talaga yung mga ganun eh. Disturbing sa mga mambabasa.

ouch. Now I’m conscious enough if my layout is way too pink that it looks so unpleasant already. :(

about the validations, I placed this in my portfolio. It’s validated. But when I started putting contents in it, it started to mess out. So nonsense at all.

OT: About your question to my post, I’m not sure but the one stated in the box is HP Deskjet Ink Advantage

number one is the most common and i hated number 2, and number 4 super loooong entries, i find them booooring and all crap to me,, lol btw,, care for a link ex?

    Your name:jami
    Your website’s URL:candy-pill.com
A link where I can find my link:http://candy-pill.com/links/

  18. Hey, thanks for commenting :)

Yeah they were pretending. Ugh. Stupid peoples. It really ruined the night as they were ‘really hyper’ – pretending to be drunk. GAHHHH.
JoBros, haha ^__^ I used to love Joe, I don’t like his haircut in that new show of theirs. And Kevin just erks me.

You should put that as an article :D

Eugh. Too much pink would be like “AHH. X. BYELATRZKTNX.” =P

Eugh those music players, and they are so stupid, often the music is awful! I was on a site that last day and it was this song and it sounded like people were ‘doing it’ in it. Awkward.

Line height. I don’t think I ever paid attention to that! But it annoys me when the font is too close =.=”

LOL, I must say I can’t comment #4, as I sometimes do that.. :P whoops. I might start shertening them. ^_~

My XHTML isn’t valid, haha, so I won’t be putting those tags there. Oh well. :D

  19. Me too, Georgina’s experimented with a new style. Regardless, her new theme is amazing as the rest of her other ones. :)

Vicky’s layouts are always mind blowing.

Mmm yes, I prefer simple layouts that are clean, simple and neat. It looks professional, well to me anyway.

Hmm, people make life complicated. There’s always going to be drama somewhere, but can we live without it? We hear drama everywhere, on the news, in public places, celebrities.. drama just makes life more interesting I think.

1 – I totally agree, blah. Pink is one of the colours I hate the most, I don’t really mind though.

2 – Annoying. I don’t want my music to clash with other music, probably not my taste. I have to check 92849578 different tabs in my browser to check where it’s coming from because I load lots of pages at the same time.

3 – Line Height – I kind of hate this but like it now. It’s pretty useful, I don’t want to squint my eyes to read a line.

4 – Super long entries just bore me in general, I don’t mind if it’s interesting but most long entries are boring. I’ll just read 5 words and then press the ‘x’ button.

5 – I don’t really care about this much but I find it funny the amount of people who do that, heh.

I agree with your pet peeves.. especially the one with the background music playing in the background. Sometimes I have multiple tabs on my browsers and it’s hard to detect which of the tabs the music is coming from so it’s such a hassle! Argh. -_- Super long entries (especially those that I can’t relate to) can be such a bore, too. But I still try to read through the whole thing as much as I can. Heh.

  20. yes! i super agree with #1. pink is somehow overrated na.
“Too much of everything might spoil the whole thing.” <-very well said :D

and the auto-play. like, it annoys every atom there is. grabe!

haha! god, everything you said is so right.

  21. I hate all them things too, mostly the first one ewww, Nice site Michael =)

  22. I am so guilty of the number one but I changed. Hahaha. I wasn’t satisfied with the themes I make so I stopped and get pre-themes. Hahahaha! Lazyyyy. And there was this time I read a RED BLOG. It was pure red and my eyes hurt the worst after reading his long entry. His entries are not senseless and boring so it was so sad the color only made me avoid his blog.

I agree with the background music. I do sometimes open 6-7 blogs at the same time and then suddenly a music will be played. That just sucks. I would panic looking where the music’s coming from. :|

I’m not particular with how long the entries are as long as the person himself interests me.

5 – I did make some themes for myself and never did I make them right. Hahaha. But I never claimed them to have valid codes because they will never have. HAHAHAHA! People who put those images are so pathetic. =))

I agree. Actually, I don’t like seeing Pinkish theme. First, it’s irritating and second, many webmasters are using PINK as there theme’s color. Really, where’s the originality??

LOL nice list. :) I agree with #1 and #2 – they’re also the same reason why I deleted my Friendster account. Whenever I come across a site that has either of those two (much worse if both), I never waste another nanosecond reading whatever is in it.

    Nice blog :)
